BioGRAPHY

Jonathan D. Grunberg practices complex civil litigation. While he has focused on defamation, personal injury, civil rights, the False Claims Act, business litigation, and trusts and estates, Jonathan is a generalist who has tackled a broad range of litigation.

Jonathan has represented individuals and companies in high-profile defamation matters across the country, including against large media companies such as CNN, CBS, Viacom, the Washington Post, and NBC Universal. Jonathan serves as more than an attorney: he’s often a crisis manager, safeguarding clients against threats to destroy their reputations. Ideally, Jonathan is retained before publication—allowing him to kill false stories or to have the false material removed before it’s made public. If a false story has already been published, Jonathan is experienced at getting it taken down.  When it ultimately comes to litigation, Jonathan has gone toe-to-toe against the media—helping obtain significant recoveries, while fending off the media’s attempts to have a case thrown out of court.  Jonathan’s work includes precedent setting litigation against CNN that freed plaintiffs from the risk of paying defendants’ attorneys’ fees.

Jonathan’s practice is guided by his mission to help clients who have been injured—whether that injury stems from a trucking accident, professional negligence, wrongful death, breach of contract, civil rights violations, or trusts and estates disputes. He has helped victims and their families recover millions of dollars. In the False Claims Act arena, Jonathan has extensive experience involving Medicare fraud, including representing whistle blowers in a record-setting case that settled for $450 million dollars.

Jonathan is also an experienced business litigator, representing companies in multi-million dollar disputes against competitors and vendors, as well as regulatory disputes with the government.

Jonathan began his legal career clerking for federal judges in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. This taught Jonathan how judges decide cases and how to frame the issues he now litigates. He credits his clerkships for making him a generalist that confidently applies his legal toolkit to a range of practice areas, as opposed to being pigeonholed in one.

Jonathan earned his law degree from Duke University School of Law, where he was a member of the Duke Law Moot Court Board and an editor of the Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Active in his community, Jonathan is a Grady Hospital Ambassador, and he sits on the boards of the Georgia Latino Law Foundation. He has also served as the co-chair of the Atlanta Black-Jewish Coalition’s Project Understanding and of the Atlanta Black-Jewish Community Seder.
